Summertime In The LBC
The Queen Mary - Long Beach, CA
July 07, 2018
Temperatures were expected to hit the hundreds last weekend in Long Beach but the music gods looked down on the shoreline and gifted attendees of Summertime In The LBC with beautiful mid 80s instead. This year’s lineup consisted of more than 20 artists who helped shape the Hip Hop industry including headliner Snoop Dogg who performed his 1993 debut album with Death Row Records, Doggystyle, which is turning 25 this November. With both GA and VIP sold out, the ocean view grounds were literally crammed from corner to corner with bodies.
Upon arrival, attendees were instructed to park miles away in designated parking lots and were then shuttled into the festival grounds. This the standard parking accommodations that Goldenvoice and the Observatory have been doing ever since festivals began in this area. I heard from others that last year was hectic trying to get out of there even while the festival was still up and running but this year there were more shuttles and buses available making that run relatively ok.
Keeping the layout the same as Smokin’ Grooves a few weeks earlier and Smokers Club Fest back in April, there were two stages, main being labeled the 40 oz. Stage and the Kickback Stage is where fans could enjoy acts such as The Isley Brothers, Tha Dogg Pound and Method Man and Redman...if they could actually make it physically over there. The stages were across the street from each other, with a underground narrow tunnel walkway and an overpass bridge were the only routes to get from stage to stage. By 5:00 it became almost impossible to get around and most ended up staying put on one side or the other for the remainder of the day.
The 40 oz. Stage had the crowd split down the middle with the VIP section on one side with their own lounging area available (with an extra price of course) and GA on the other. Artists were brought in from the 80’s and 90’s eras providing a variety for all ages. The Dove Shack, who’s song inspired the festival name, Snoop Dogg and The Game were accompanied by full bands whereas artists such as Ja Rule & Ashanti, Warren G and Ice Cube had teamed up with their guest DJs to get the crowd dancing.
Ice Cube had a flawless set and probably one of the best performances of the day. With him was special guest rapper WC aka “Dub C” for a portion of his set and a screen backdrop projecting clips from his movies at one point. But it was at the end of his stage time that the rapper/actor made everyone’s night with his performance of NWA’s “Straight Outta Compton.” Unfortunately, Snoop Dogg had some sound malfunctions throwing things off performance wise but it didn’t stop the party on stage with the 46 year old rapper complete with blunt in hand. The technical difficulties didn’t deter fans either from singing along and enjoying the close out to their long day in the Long Beach harbor.
I’d say Summertime In The LBC was a success this year. But with the grounds recent events selling out, hopefully we can see this annual Goldenvoice festival upgraded to a larger lot in the upcoming years or better yet, expanded into a 2 day event.
