Tempe, AZ hardcore quintet Lifelink are back with their 3rd EP and Innerstrength Records debut, "Love Lost". Six songs filled with heavy and heartfelt lyrics and complex instrumentals, Lifelink are stepping up their creative mastering with this solid under 20 minute EP. For fans of Counterparts, Novelists and Northlane, Lifelink deliver an intense and progressive brand of hardcore, with intricate, weaving guitars that compliment frontman Luke Blanchard’s resounding and emotive lead vocals.
Stepping right into the first track, listeners get the tone of the EP in the first thirty seconds of the opening song, “Cloud Kicker.” The heavy grooves mixed in with uptempo parts, this track almost feels like two songs in one. A calm bridge is overpowered with the band’s loop around to the same intensity you experience from the very first verse and not letting up on the heavy vocal pairings. The immediate jump into the following track, “Terminal” was the video that Lifelink released announcing the EP to come. This track is probably my favorite off “Love Lost.” At the two minute mark the in-depth breakdown with the poetry slamming lyrics, this whole song grabs you by the gut especially with the line, “I’m nothing more than a terminal attachment.” Showcasing their hardcore roots, “Unhealed” is the heaviest track featured on the EP. Although each song has weighted lyrics, this specific track hits close to home for all of those who need to express to those who have ever left you damaged internally. There is no shortage of rage and anger in this song and each drum beat pounds those emotions like a dagger to the heart.
Deep in the dark soundscape, the interlude “Love,” is the much needed calm before the storm following with the remaining two tracks. The expression of emotions in Luke’s voice put you directly in his shoes during this writing process. With EP’s sometimes the music feels condensed but with “Love Lost” the band expanded their style and ability in all the right places and this shines through in “Lost.” You hear uplifting moments with overlapping vocals and heavy hits in bass and percussion. To end out with a lasting impression, “Washed Away” is sublimely mastered giving each member and instrument their own stand out moments.
Of the 3 EP’s that Lifelink have created together, they made sure to get their message across, music out there and make a strong name for themselves with “Love Lost.” Essentially the album is full of tragedy and pain, but thats what helps them relate so well to their listeners through this music. Each component of every song has a driving force for this genre. Lifelink are triumphing over their peers with their mosh inducing heaviness and strong vocals and therefore “Love Lost” is a solid standout release from a solid standout band.
