Concert Review: Real Friends - House of Blues - Anaheim, CA (05/14/17)

Mother’s Day got personal with Real Friends at House of Blues in Anaheim on 05/12/17.  The band created a living room style stage set up allowing fans into the home inside their heads.  Mid way through this headlining tour, Real Friends have been traveling around with some very talented support from Tiny Moving Parts, Have Mercy, Broadside and Nothing, Nowhere.  A solid tour package that provides attendees a night of pop punk mixed with raw emotion, friendship and closeness, and lets not forget the most important key…an all around good time.

The night began with Nothing, Nowhere. and Broadside lighting up the room with their stage presence and personalities alone and started the excitement for the crowd that showed up early to see the package in its entirety.  As each band came to a close, fans couldn’t help but become more and more eager for the next band to take the stage since this tour had one of the best lineups of the year so far for this genre.  Point proven with Have Mercy and Tiny Moving Parts.  From Brian Swindle’s (Have Mercy) throaty vocals to Dylan Mattheisen’s (Tiny Moving Parts) electrifying finger tapping, the supporting bands put it all out there giving everyone a night to never forget.

As the lights went down for Real Friends on the stage, candles illuminated the old TV set and recliner complete with a crocheted afghan.  The crowd immediately started in and let loose all that anticipation that been leading up to this night for the past few months with singing along and crowd surfing to “Empty Picture Frames.”  And this was only the first 4 minutes of their set!  Climbing over each other, jumping with friends and participating in a friendly mosh pop punk mosh pit, fans went wild for old time favorites “Late Nights In My Car” and “Lost Boy.”  Calming things down for a bit, vocalist Dan Lambton paired up with guitarist Eric Haines for a calm and cool “Sixteen” and an even more special performance of “I’ve Given Up On You” with just Dan, guitarist Dave Knox, and the hundreds of fans yelling every word along with them.  After a 19 song set the guys kindly thanked everyone, walked off and thankfully returned for a powerful encore with “Summer.”

This tour was definitely a one of a kind with a lineup that resembles a pop punk fans Spotify playlist.  Real Friends take pride in what they are fortunate to do on an everyday basis and portray that on stage.  This is the best way possible to thank fans by giving them exactly what they came for…good music, a fun time and an atmosphere of light-heartedness that surrounds pop punk shows.  This is Real Friends only US tour for this year, so don’t skip out on this one!
