Drink, drink and be merry! 91X's 3rd annual BeerX was host to a bevy of different breweries showcasing the best beers they have to offer, alongside some great tunes from the likes of Iration, Jboog, and Magic, to name a few.
Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego was the location for this year's event and it's mix of land and sea was the perfect setting for it. The sun was out in full force and completely burned off the slight gloom of the overcast and slightly cold morning.
Walking down the line of beer tents a few stuck out above the rest. Most notably was Washington Gold Cider, a crispy and almost dangerously smooth "hard" cider that not only quenched your thirst but snuck up on you with a punch. Left Coast Brewing Co. offered up a delicious amber ale that went down smooth and didn't leave that "bitter beer" taste that lighter/ hoppier beers are known to have. Topping off the color spectrum we had Mike Hess Brewery and their Cappuccino Stout, which was basically the best cappuccino I've ever had with alcohol brewed into it, kinda made me feel like I was every substitute teacher in a bad 80s movie.
The music line-up consisted of Splavender, a five piece Indie-Surf rock band out of San Diego that started off the day and quickly drew a crowd toward the stage with their infectious guitar riffs and smooth Sax solos. They were followed by Trouble in the Wind, a Folky, Americana, Country-Rock group from Carlsbad that left it all out there with their banjos, guitars, upright bass, brushes and even an accordion to boot!
Magic! hit the stage at 4:20 (wink wink) and everyone was waiting for the Canadian Reggae-Pop group's hit single "Rude" from their debut studio album "Don't Kill the Magic!" to play out of the speakers. Nasri (Lead singer) crooned through his set as fans danced, laughed, and swayed with every drum beat.
Chicano Batman took the stage and his old school swagger couldn't be missed with his band uniformly dressed in matching suits and ruffled button-ups. They played songs from their "Freedom is Free" album and led by Eduardo Arenas, the psychedelic soul band brought funky back in waves.
J Boog, the Long Beach/ Compton raised Samoan son of a Chief, killed the stage with his authentic island sound. As his smash hit "Let's Do It Again" played fans sang along as he spread his message of love and good vibes into nights sky. Then Iration set the stage on fire with an amazing light show that was the perfect end to the evening. As the sun finally set on Beer X 2017, the Santa Barbara "Sunshine" reggae-rock groupbrought fans (now as far spread as the eye can see) to a roar!
Everyone left Beer X 2017 with a smile on their face, great memories and more than a few new favorite beers to add to their lists. This was definitely an event that will be remember by everyone, and we can't wait to see what next year has in store!
