Chase Atlantic - PHASES
Release Date: June 28, 2019
Words by: Jillian Ragsdale
If you’re a fan of Australian pop trio Chase Atlantic, you’ve probably been anticipating PHASES since the release of “HER”. If you haven’t heard of them and you're a fan of pop, alternative, rock, or R&B, you might find a noteworthy release or potential 2019 AOTY contender on June 28th.
The record starts with an intro track that builds anticipation through its atmospheric instrumentation and futuristic elements. Following it is “ANGELS”, which combines an alternative-pop sound reminiscent of the band’s earlier music with the more R&B sound that seems to be prevalent in their more recent singles.
As it continues, it explores a variety of genres the band take influence from. “HEAVEN AND BACK” and “I NEVER EXISTED” are danceable 80’s new wave-esque tracks rich in their layers that sound like they shine, whereas “NO RAINBOWS” and “TOO LATE” are darker and more trap beat-heavy. While PHASES established it’s overall theme and ambiance early on, I appreciate how simultaneously uniform and diverse it is. No singular track pinpoints what Chase Atlantic’s sound “is”, but every one unapologetically exhibits the band’s essence.
Compared to the band’s self-titled record, PHASES delivers more breadth, maturity, and sonic diversity. Instrumentally, each track showcases its own variety of textures and builds its appropriate ambiance. Lyrically, PHASES explores darker themes like mental illness and the dichotomy of depression and mania, as well as themes the band has written about prior such as addiction, relationships, and finding pleasure in material things.
Personally, my favorite tracks are “NO RAINBOWS”, “TOO LATE”, and “I DON’T LIKE DARKNESS”.
The different elements of PHASES collectively manifest themselves in a way that could resonate with a variety of people, and because of that, it’s undoubtedly going to be the summer soundtrack for many.
