Spiritual Cramp - 'Police State' EP
Label: Deranged Records
Release Date: June 08, 2018
Spiritual Cramp are the most refreshing band in the world of punk music right now. The group
originates from the wonderful land of San Francisco, CA and embraces the diverse spirit the city is known to foster. Composed of several familiar names, such as vocalist Michael Bingham
(Creative Adult, Profile), bassist Michael Fenton (Creative Adult, Fearing), guitarists Jacob Breeze (World Smasher) and Stewart Kuhlo, drummer Blaine Patrick, and Max Wickham (Primal Rite, Fatigue) on the tambourine, the six come together to create a unique stamp not only in punk, or even the bay area, but music in general. Their debut EP Mass Hysteria (React Records) was a bombastic display of rhythm and attitude, and they’ve only gotten better since then. Spiritual Cramp has now teamed up with Deranged Records to release their second EP, Police State.
Two songs are already familiar staples in their live set that I’ve been anticipating. The band’s
title track is an immediate burst and encompasses their energy into a simple but unforgettable
introduction. I’ve got a spiritual cramp, shouts Bingham over and over. If you didn’t know that
before, you do now. Third track and lead single, "I Feel Bad Bein’ Me", has also been apart of their set. It’s an urgent and groovy song. Bingham has an ability to combine his heartfelt lyrics with such an infectious sound. It’s upbeat, but emotional, and you can dance to it. Every check in my book is marked.
"805 Bryant" is something very new. It’s slow, and absolutely smooth. Karli Helm (Pllush) joins
the boys on this reggae track and provides hypnotic vocals to accompany Bingham’s already
debonair style of singing. Lastly, "Bloodclot" is a straight-forward song leaning towards a pop
sound, but the bands puts a definitive mark on the idea of a catchy tune. It builds and burns you down at the same time.
Spiritual Cramp has brought something new and exciting into a stale realm of music. They break the rules, and reinvent everything you ever knew about punk. They will begin a trip down the west coast this weekend with Fiddlehead (Run For Cover Records). Check the dates below and catch them at this year’s Sound and Fury Festival in Los Angeles, CA.
