Calmgrove - “Retrace”
Release Date: October 16, 2018
Southern California pop punk quintet Calmgrove are one upping themselves with a special release. Since their initial debut earlier this year, the band have been keeping busy with a few shows but mostly creating new music to keep this endeavor going. To premiere the video for their sophomore single “Retrace”, Calmgrove teamed up with Punknews today to help spread the upbeat track’s accompanying video.
“Retrace” begins with a subtle intro with echoing vocals rising in the background. The band creates a momentum with their buildup before they fully grasp your attention with classic pop punk riffs and drum fills similar to acts that helped pave the road for their style. The pop punk genre has been evolving and slowly losing it’s root sound but Calmgrove pay homage to the emo era in their delivery. The single mixes old and new styles together and is attracting for all age ranges including pop punk veterans on the millennial cusp.
With just less than a year under their belts for this new project, I’d have to say, so far so good. With the heart and experiences Calmgrove puts into their music, I’d love to see what they could put together for a concept album or EP in the future.
